Social Media And You

Over the past few years major natural disasters along with political and social upheavals around the world have highlighted the power of social media tools like Facebook, Twitter, Google, YouTube, Websites, and Blogging.  From the Haiti Earthquake and Pakistan Tsunami to the North Africa uprisings and the latest conflict in Syria, the impact of social media outlets to relay information worldwide is not only phenomenal, but indicative of the changing nature of news reporting and sharing.

In this digital age it is becoming a necessity to understand how to use social media as an effective tool of communication, campaigning and information sharing.  At BSWN we conduct numerous trainings that focus on computer literacy and proficiency along with various capacity building workshops/seminars/trainings tailored to the needs of the sector, including workshops focused on social media.

Our main focus is to use this social media platform, in all its forms, to promote a campaign of social justice and equality.  With information literally available at everyone’s fingertips, the potential to truly create and implement effective change, spread new ideas, and pave the way for a new way of thinking about society is at the touch of a few buttons.

But, in order for organizations and communities to use these instruments effectively there must be continuing e-learning taking place.  Besides the trainings we offer there are also a number of various free online resources individuals and organizations can use to engage in continual e-learning, to not only learn how to effectively use social media, but also other aspects of charity/non profit/civil society work.  For more information on some outlets that offer free online e-learning click here.

About Black Southwest Network (BSWN)

BSWN is a regional infrastructure organisation that supports BME and other marginal community organisations in the South West. Its vision and mission are to promote and advocate on behalf of the BME and other marginal Voluntary and Community Sector organisation (BVCS). To strengthen the BVCS in the region by increasing its influence in policy arenas, developing the capacity of the BVCS, providing support, and facilitating skills and knowledge sharing across the sector. The work we do involves a strategic action and delivery-based approach to overcoming discrimination, exclusion, and under representation among the BME, and other marginal communities, in the South West. Moreover, our approach also aims to empower these communities by tackling socio-economic deprivation by working in partnership with other agencies and organisations. As a whole, BSWN is a one-stop-shop for capacity building and community empowerment where with our members we work to create a better informed, skilled and represented third sector
